Ok. So Portland Oregon is known for a few things: Trail Blazers, beavers, organic everything and lots of rain…
While I was there shooting new episodes of American Journey with HLN, I found out it’s also known for really cool people, doing pretty cool things.
I met a guy named Terrance who is only 23 but a mixed martial artist already competing with the best in the world (you’ll hear more about him on the show).
I think it’s safe to say music is a big part of what Portland is about. Everyone is into it including the Roosevelt High Rough Riders marching band.
These kids were awesome and played the Rocky theme about 17 times until we got the shot we needed. Shout out… You guys rock!
Jamming with the band was a warm-up to what that town can bring when it comes to music. Portland not only has tons of cool bars and restaurants with live music but great venues to see big acts. But one act you don’t want to miss is the karaoke scene especially Baby Ketten Karaoke that I caught on a Wednesday night at a place called The Rose. This is karaoke like you’ve never heard.
A guy named John who was recently written about in the New York Times started recording tracks to cool but somewhat obscure songs that can’t be found on most karaoke catalogues. With a variety from Bjork to Ween, I was seriously blown away at not only the selection of songs, but also the talented singers. These peeps were not only killing it on the mic but dancing and cheering on the next crooner on the list.
That night my ears were filled with some pretty awesome jams, my people really celebrating the music they love.
So the next day, my ears might have been filled but my stomach was empty and once again Portland delivered.
Well actually they let me take out. There is a whole town block full of food trucks that stay in a certain location. From Thai food to BBQ, they have a bit everything and hey… what’s life without a little variety?
Good sounds, good eats and good times!
