It’s time for another design dilemma and this next one is a popular one…
I love your design tips and since you’re the expert maybe you can help me with this one… I can’t think of any way to put a spark into my home. I’ve tried color and I’ve ripped up the carpet but it still seems bland. Any ideas to give it some charm and style?
Well, you’re not alone! Tons of folks are looking for ways to bring a little personality to a square room, so I’ve got some tips to help get you outside the box.
If you live in a space with many 90-degree angles, one of the best things to do (without knocking down walls) is to bring some contrast to the sharp corners. Try adding circle patterns to the draperies and wall coverings, and look for furniture that has curves and feminine shapes.
Paisleys and other soft patterns work as wall coverings and upholstery, but keep away from geometrics that repeat.
These 50’s style kidney shaped pieces are perfect for achieving this look.
If your budget allows, you can also try to open up square spaces by enlarging doorways or adding arches to the doors. These changes are easier than most people think and in some cases, can be done in a few days! And when it comes to square windows, adding arches are a bit tricky. I’d recommend trying some tricks with window treatments or molding to give the effect of arches.
No matter what you decided, always remember that just because you don’t have curves doesn’t mean you’re a square! Don’t feel trapped in a box, you definitely have options.
