Back to School Basics: Keep the Kids Organized

Even though I don’t have firsthand parenting experience when it comes to back-to-school stuff, I have some tricks up my sleeve that will help keep your kids (and their schoolwork!) in order.

Check them out below…

Back to School Basics: Keep the Kids Organized

Designate a simple station for schoolwork. Pick a central area in your home with lots of storage space and keep it simple because kids can be easily distracted… I know I was!

Design your study station to suit your kids’ work methods. Try to encourage children by using bright colors on walls and displaying their finished work as décor. Once they see their schoolwork framed and a part of your home, it just might motivate them to keep up the A+ work!

Back to School Basics: Keep the Kids Organized

Organize clutter by keeping daily supplies – pens, pencils, erasers etc. – within reach and everything else stored away. When you have to whip out the art and craft supplies, you’ll know where to find them!

Find a filing system for paperwork that works best for you and your family’s needs. A convenient location like the kitchen is always a good idea, but wicker baskets work well too. Try to organize you children’s’ paperwork into categories of priority – is it something you need to act on now or refer to throughout the year?

Back to School Basics: Keep the Kids Organized

Assign specific places for schoolbooks, homework and backpacks otherwise you’ll find these items dropped all over the house. Make sure that putting items in their designated places becomes a part of your kids’ schedule and it will soon be second nature… I think.

And if you need extra help, my friend Janette has some good tips for creating work-play spaces for kids.

I have 5 grand kids that I am raising. Well four all year and one of my own , my fountain of youth child. The others I get during the summer. I love to learn and I love homework. This time around I might get smarter then a fifth grader. I believe I passed my adhd on to at least 3 of them :-/ so attention, distraction and motivation are main words in my mind mind when it comes to schoolwork, everything really. I don’t give allowance for chores we live in it we all clean it. But if you had a job you would get a paycheck. So I pay a dollar a day for ; getting up without complaint, doing homework, and not getting in trouble at school. Those are all I am in control of. The teacher does the rest. But homework is not just the teachers we all know that. So on top of hers I have mine. They have to teach each other. That will help coworkers in the future..I just wish I had a computer. It can be a nightmare for the library at times. And homework with five can take awhile ha ha. If I misspelled anything its my glasses or auto edit.ha ha

Have a very good workstation to work on so that way it will be easier for you. Enjoy yourself and stay focus while you are in school and in the end it will be all worth it. Stay motivated, committed, dedicated, and get to know your classmates.

Hi Ty,
These are great ideas. Thank you!

My kids are so proud of their artwork or school work. By the end of the year we have a moving box full of “stuff”. Any suggestions for displaying their work, not squashing their self-pride, and keeping my house from being a tornado full of papers?

Many thanks!
Davina

These are some super cute ideas Ty, I started homeschooling this year and I wish I could incorporate some of these ideas. My head says yes, budget says no especially with just one income. Any ideas that includevery little to no cost?? I have a handy husband, but extremely tight budget with four kids!

At your workstation put up a bulletin board or even a white board. It helps you visualize what you need to get done and also helps keep track of important papers. A bulletin board is also nice to display how well you did on an exam or artwork too! Cork is cool – it doesn’t have to look like a standard bulletin board: http://www.houzz.com/projects/184676/Jelinek-Cork-Walls—Ceilings

If you don’t have a lot of room or budget, consider a fishing tackle box or toolbox to hold all the school supplies needed for homework. You can use a clip board or a small folding table as the writing space. This works very well if you have kids that like to be outdoors in the afternoon or go to another relatives house to work.

Scan your kids artwork and then make it your screen saver. That way you can see their work each time you pass the computer. Throw away the original. The art is valued, but the clutter is gone!

Hello, Ty,

I’d like to thank you for inspiring me and my family! Because of you, we have this urge to do something for the needy, especially the little children of our planet who need help. Not one of your shows has been watched here in a small Finnish town without shedding some tears – of compassion, gratitude and joy. Your team is so great and your personal input – it is beyond words. I love you from the bottom of my heart, all my family do, for what you are and what you do. It cannot be easy, being exposed and available like that, doing so much traveling and all. Thank you so much for your personal sacrifice and for your love of our human family.

May the Infinite Source of all life be with you and bless your personal life, and your work.
We love you, Ty. Thank you, it is such a blessing to know your beautiful soul, your presence on Earth has made me and my family better persons.
